It’s easy to empathize with Tom Sawyer, and not just because of his immortalization in Canadian Rock canon thanks to Rush. Painting a fence is a laborious process, especially if you have a big one, and it’s nice to dream of convincing other people to paint it because “it’s fun”. We’ll let you in on a secret: even if you can get small children to paint your fence for fun, you probably don’t want to. They won’t know anything about preparing the fence to be painted, whether they should use paints or stains, or how to apply the coat evenly; they’re also unlikely to be able to reach the top of the fence, seeing as you convinced them it was a good way to spend the afternoon.

You want your fence to be well painted for a variety of reasons. First, curb appeal! Having a nice looking fence will not only wow your neighbors, it will put a smile on your face; everyone likes a good looking yard. Second, paint and staining will improve your fence’s resistance to the elements; UV rays will be less able to penetrate into the wood, and you’ll slow the effects of moisture, helping you avoid rotted wood.
There’s a lot to consider when you’re looking to paint your fence. First, does it need to be painted? Some folks recommend painting your fence every two or three years, but there’s a few spot tests you can do. When your fence looks faded or discoloured, it’s probably time for a new paint job. Even when it doesn’t, if you apply water to it and it gets absorbed instead of beading, it’s a sign the protective qualities of the paint have worn off; the wood is absorbing water, which can quickly lead to rot. Should these conditions pop up, it’s time for a new paint job. |
What kind of paint you’re going to choose is relevant, too. If you’ve used oil based stains in the past, it’s probably a good idea to go with those again - conversely, if you’ve used acrylic based paints, you’ll want to keep going with those. Are you tired of your old paint colour, and want something new? That’s something we can do, but you’ll have to get all of the old paint off of your fence so it doesn’t affect the application of the new paint, or show through when the new paint starts to wear. Are you concerned about the environment? There are eco-friendly VOC paints available, but they do tend to cost a bit more; the cost benefit analysis is an important part of the conversation of any home renovation project.
