Trim Painting and RepairsWE GO TO GREAT LENGTHS FOR YOUR SPACE TO REACH IT FULL POTENTIAL
It’s often the little things, the tiny details, that matter the most. A bow on a nicely wrapped gift, a signature on a collectible, the delicately placed garnish on a meal. These little details catch the eye by contrasting with, yet complementing, their surroundings. The same can be said for the trim around your house; while it’s mostly decorative in nature, it adds depth to the textures and colours of your home. Trim makes a house a home, so it should be well taken care of.

So what, exactly, is trim? Well, it’s a lot of different things; it exists on both the exterior and the interior of your home. Door frames are certainly trim, as are window frames and window sills. Crown moulding is trim, as are the baseboards; pillars near a staircase or fireplace are also trim. Basically, if it’s in your home as a decorative accent, it’s trim, even when it serves some other purpose; it stands out against the otherwise uniform walls, floors and ceiling. Trim immediately draws the eye because it creates a change in the visual landscape; you can use paint to make it more subtle or more bold.
Trim being such an eye-catcher means that when it’s cracked or damaged, people will notice. Trim can be especially difficult to repair since, by its nature, it’s both small and multi-surfaced. You’ll often need to work with very tiny, precision instruments in order to patch trim without making a mess of the surrounding area. |
Painting trim is challenging for many of the same reasons; you need to achieve a uniform coat along a small, multifaceted area. Additionally, when painting trim, you’ll often opt to use a different colour than the rest of the room. The visual interest of trim comes from it’s contrast with the rest of the room, and painting it the same colour is odd; our eyes want it to look different, because it’s so clearly set apart from the rest of the materials in use. That means painting trim is especially risky, because if you get some of the paint onto the wall, it’s very likely going to be in a markedly different shade or colour than the wall’s paint; that means you’ll have to repaint that section of the wall. You also want the trim to be painted perfectly, because it stands out so starkly; people will look at it and notice any blemishes.
